Followup: twitter, a day later

by Matt on Aug.19, 2008 at 16:03 CDT, under twitter

I’ve now had a twitter account for just over one day. At first, there wasn’t much going on due to a limited number of contacts, but this morning, PixelRN posted a list of nurses that blog and changed my life in the twitterverse forever.

It appears that many of us on her list simultaneously chose to follow each other, weaving a giant spiderweb of twitter contacts (or whatever they are no doubt stupidly called).

I’m now following+followed with over 30+ people, and the twitter-thingy has been quite busy. Several interesting micro-conversations to date, although I’m not sure how much of it is a novelty act for me at this point. I guess time will tell.

On that note, I found a decent plugin that notifies twitter whenever I create a new blog post, and also creates a 24-hour blog archive post of my tweets. Creepy. We’ll see how long this lasts.

Pseudoscience and Nursing, Part II

by Matt on Aug.19, 2008 at 11:15 CDT, under pseudoscience

All aboard the Woo Woo Train!

In part one I touched on many different issues involved in nursing that bothered me as a rational guy. Today, I want to discuss one specific issue: Energy Fields.

Yes, energy fields. Auras. Chi. It’s all junk and it’s all pseudoscience that shouldn’t be associated in any capacity with a supposedly evidence based science-backed profession such as nursing. Yet, not only are there nurses who espouse such beliefs, energy field disturbances are actually included as a NANDA approved nursing diagnosis! Don’t believe me? Here’s the relevant page from Nursing Diagnosis, 11th Ed. More after the jump.

Systemic Venous Tachycardia

by Matt on Aug.19, 2008 at 08:01 CDT, under school

No, there isn’t a typo in the headline. That’s actually how one of my instructors defined SVT in our cardiac lecture last semester. While she was an otherwise great instructor, clearly cardiac wasn’t her bag.

I just got my calendar for this semester, and it looks like fun. We have great second year instructors including a pediatric nurse practitioner and an emergency clinical nurse specialist, and of course the material itself is no longer the watered down basics. Here’s my mini-syllabus:

  1. Maternity
  2. Newborn
  3. Cardiac/Respiratory (Adult+Pedi)
  4. Legal stuff
  5. Blood
  6. Neuro
  7. Mental Health
  8. Renal
  9. More Legal Stuff
  10. TRAUMA / SHOCK / BURNS, baby!

They always save the best lecture series for last.
